Born in the Netherlands and currently working from Bali, Irene Hoff is a visual artist whose work stands at the confluence of portraiture, collage and layered narrative. Drawing from over 25 years of experience living in Asia, her paintings reflect a journey of cultural immersion and personal transformation. 

Hoff’s signature practice engages the female figure — serene, poised, often viewed in profile or frontally — as a vessel of memory. Around the visage she weaves dens of pattern, botanical fragments, torn paper, acrylic drips and collage elements: the décor of experience made visible. The face remains calm; the halo of lines and textures vibrates with energy, suggesting a psyche alive with stories.

Her process is tightly disciplined: a pale textured ground is laid, followed by collage of printed or hand-torn surfaces, layered with acrylic glazes, then refined by drawing and abrasion so that earlier strata remain perceptible. The result is work that reads as both still and kinetic, intimate and expansive.

Hoff’s palette — chalk whites, dusty blush, coral, sage and lacquered red — balances decorum with lightness. She mines folklore, nature, and the vestiges of vernacular design to frame questions about identity, heritage and presence in the modern world. Her art encourages the viewer to pause: to see not just what is shown, but what lies beneath, what connects. Hoff invites us into a moment of tranquility amid complexity.
