ARTIST PROFILE

Born in West Bengal (India, 1973) and now based in Baroda,  Debasish Dutta is a National Award (Lalit Kala Akademi, 2018)–winning artist. Dutta studied fine art at Rabindra Bharati University and completed his MA at M.S. University of Baroda. At the Affordable Art Fair, Canvas & Weaves presents Journey — one of Dutta’s most celebrated and best-selling series, which he continues to revisit and evolve through his practice.

Each work in Journey is meticulously hand-painted, populated with hundreds of minute figures rendered freehand — each one distinct, yet part of a collective rhythm. Seen from a distance, they move like a flowing current of humanity; up close, they reveal stories of aspiration, anonymity, and quiet endurance.

For Dutta, the crowd is not chaos but context — the terrain through which every person must navigate to become who they are. In Journey, the lone figure balancing at the edge of the frame becomes a quiet metaphor for perseverance: the delicate act of finding one’s footing amid thousands moving in parallel. There is tenderness in his observation of humanity — an understanding that our striving and stillness, our solitude and collectivity, coexist on the same field.
