ARTIST PROFILE
Bhuwal Prasad – Urban Crowd Field Series
Born in 1987 in Uttar Pradesh, Bhuwal Prasad completed his BFA from the Faculty of Visual Arts, Banaras Hindu University (2010) and his MFA from the College of Art, New Delhi (2012). Based in Delhi, he is one of India’s most promising young contemporary artists — a name to look out for.
Bhuwal’s artistic journey began with a deep engagement with tribal and folk art. He was fascinated by the rhythm of the background — the negative space that often supported the central subject. In his current series, Urban Crowd Field, those very backgrounds take the lead. What was once peripheral now becomes the narrative itself.
Across these vast canvases, he builds intricate, maze-like compositions through layers of bold, confident linework. Hidden within these abstract terrains are dogs, birds, human faces, and bustling crowds — each form revealing itself gradually, like secrets surfacing from memory. His process involves multiple layers of colour and contour, often painting the base, tracing over it to make the lines more opaque, and refining the surface until it reaches a dynamic visual depth.
Merging the ethos of folk art with a distinctly modern sensibility, Bhuwal transforms traditional symbolism into a dynamic language of the present. His work captures the pulse of urban life — dense, complex, alive — while remaining rooted in the timeless discipline of hand-drawn line. His art invites viewers to lose themselves in its labyrinths — to find, within the crowd, a reflection of the self. With every shift of the eye, faces, animals, and abstract forms surface and disappear, offering fresh discoveries at every glance.
